Beautiful Things – Group exhibition at The Living Heritage Women’s Museum

The craft exhibition Beautiful Things at the Women’s Living Heritage Museum is an incredible showcase of South Africa’s artistic talent and brings together crafters from South Africa’s nine provinces. Organised by the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture, and the Department of Small Business Development, Beautiful Things has been curated by Andile Magengelele with the theme Hands On.

Amongst the featured crafters are Alex Ceramic Art in Design StudioKeiskamma Art Project and Kgotso Pati, and the exhibition has been curated to allow the different works to be in dialogue with each other while still telling their own stories. Speaking on the exhibition Andile Magengelele says, “Craft is not only a vehicle for economic empowerment, but also carries our history, stories and traditions from generation to generation. An exhibition like this allows our unique design aesthetic to evolve as younger crafters and makers are emerging. It provides access to market and new networks for creatives from all over the country. By including the incubation angle, we are able to nurture new and older talent and ensure that these gems are being taken to global markets.”

The exhibition also features a retail space which will be open Mon–Fri 08:30–16:30 and Sat 09:00–13:00 where you can purchase wares from the featured artists.  Over the next six months nine crafters (one from each province) will receive mentorship and business training from South African Creative Industries Incubator (SACII). Beautiful Things runs until September with monthly activations and events.

The Women’s Living Heritage Museum can be found at Pretoria’s Sammy Marks Square, Madiba St, Pretoria Central, Pretoria, 0001.
